Medical expenses

Health issues and medical costs can have a significant impact on your wellbeing and your finances. If you’re finding it difficult to afford healthcare or medications, support is available.

Help with medication and immediate costs

If you have a Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card, or are on a low income, you may be eligible for reduced-cost medications and other health-related support.

These cards are issued by Services Australia (Centrelink) and can significantly reduce the cost of prescription medicines and access to some health services.

If you’re having difficulty paying for medication or essential health needs, your local community information and support service may be able to help.

Support may include:

  • Assistance with the cost of prescription medications
  • Help accessing concessions and subsidies
  • Referrals to low-cost or bulk-billed services
  • Emergency relief in some circumstances

Use the Find services near you tool on this page to connect with local support.

Concessions and low-cost health services

Low-income Victorians may be eligible for a range of concessions and subsidised services to help reduce medical costs. Many of these are linked to holding a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card.

These may include:

  • Dental services
  • Essential medical equipment
  • Eye care and glasses
  • Hearing services
  • Patient transport assistance
